Our school: Budakeszi Nagy Sándor József Grammar School
General Introduction
From the 2021/22 academic year we will have two parallel 5-year classes that specialize in languages. This 5-year programme consists of one preparatory year of intensive language learning followed by 4 years of Grammar School education.
Altogether we have 9 classes. Half of the "A" classes (16 students) specialize in German, the other half and the "B" classes specialize in English (48 students in 3 groups). We put the students in the different groups of English according to their placement test results.
The German Ethnic Primary Schools in several surrounding towns and villages brought about a need for the special German class so we offer this opportunity especially for their students.
In addition to the first languages, English or German there is an option to choose one of the 3 languages, English, German or Spanish as a second language.
As a result of the intensive language learning, more and more students take international language exams on intermediate and advanced level, many of them possessing two successful language exams at the end of their studies.
A Brief History of the School
The school was founded in 1964 so it is a relatively new school. It was named after a famous Hungarian general, József Nagy Sándor, who was an outstanding figure of the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848-49 and is considered one of the 13 Martyrs of Arad.
From the 1960s to the 1980s the school had special classes in Physical Education and offered three languages to choose from: English, German, and Russian. In 1991 the school’s curriculum changed, since then we have had special language classes with an extra year when our students mainly study languages.
Facilities
The facilities have improved a lot during the years. The school building was partially renovated in 2015, but the continual development of the school facilities is an ongoing focus of our community. The school has a multi-purpose hall, used for all major school functions, provides an ideal space for school assemblies, ceremonies, class performances, games, such as board games, chess and other extracurricular activities. There is a library with periodicals, newspapers, fiction, and non-fiction books, selected for different educational value. Also, there are two ICT labs, a Sports Hall and a tartan outside sports ground which are available for our students all day long.
School life
Although our school is not very old we do have a lot of traditions and after school activities. After classes students can take up various sports such as basketball, football, handball, floorball, volleyball and they can take part in regular trainings. Chess is also part of our everyday life. During breaks or after the lessons students are enthusiastic about playing this strategic game. Every year we organize a camp to initiate the first-year students into school life. In November or December there is a ball for our school-leavers with a play performed by the 11th class students and with the traditional dances of the 12th class students. In spring, usually in March or April we have our ‘Students’ Days’ with different kinds of competitions and performances. During these days a Student Director is elected for the next year. The last event of this period is the traditional ‘Old Students’ Reunion’.
As language learning is very important in our school we have study tours every year. We travel to Great Britain or to Ireland every spring to practise English and we have already organized several study tours to Austria and Spain as well. Every winter PE teachers organise skiing trips to Austria or France.
We have had a twin school in Transylvania, Romania since 1990. It is the Ady Endre Líceum in Nagyvárad, Oradea. There is a student exchange programme between the two schools. Every year we visit each other and have mutual programmes both in Hungary and Romania.
In 2008 our school joined the eTwinning Programme. We have common projects with schools in Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Romania and Poland.
Our school has been taking part in the Erasmus + Projects (KA 229). We have done projects with Italian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Greek and Turkish schools.
Our teachers have attended Erasmus + (KA1) courses so we have had the opportunity to meet, contact and share ideas with multicultural colleagues.
